Volkswagen has another reason to celebrate especially since its unique 1.4 liter TSI engine was honored with the most prestigious and fiercely competitive International Engine of the Year award for the second year in a row. The TSI was voted by a panel of judges from around the world. The award marks the impressive first year for the engine with over 40,000 TSI-powered vehicles sold throughout Europe.
The TSI system is a remarkable combination of what can be considered as contradictory---high performance and frugal economy---why contradictory? First of all when you say high performance you always expect it to be a gas-guzzler but never a fuel saver but on the case of the TSI system you get performance and fuel economy in one.
The TSI system makes use of a small capacity 1.4 liter, four-cylinder petrol engine that is fitted with both a supercharger and a turbocharger working harmoniously. The former supplied the low down power that allows the 170 PS version equipped on Golf to sprint from 62 mph in only 7.7 seconds while the turbocharger delivers significant performance in the mid-range.
